Haloween

Owning a house in a neighborhood with kids changes your perception of Haloween. Sure, I’ve had bowels of candy before to hand out - but this seems different.

I’m a huge tech nerd - so I lit the house.

We carved pumpkins - I did a portrait of Joe.

And Joe absolutely terrified all of those nice little Latino kids that came to get candy.

Surly Wet

I ventured over to the Groveland Tap to get some Surly Wet.

Hops.

Surly Wet was brewed back on September 11th - I know becuase I was at the brewery tour that night. The smell was absolutely spectacular. It was one of those fantastic pungeant smells that sticks in your nose. I smelled it for two days. Surly had 1400 pounds of hops trucked in right off the vine from the west coast.

A smell in your nose for that long will certainly leave an impact - and I really needed to find out what the product of that crazy hopping would be. The beer certainly lived up to my weeks of curiosity.

It started hoppy, as you would expect. The middle of the tast was very similar to Furious - but this one just kept going. The aromatics were really solid, but the bitterness stayed. The last flavors of the hops didn’t leave the back of my mouth until I either a) drank more or b) waited a full minute. Now, I’m not normally a super hoppy IPA type guy - but this had so many great flavors mixed in with the acif of the hops that I found it really enjoyable.

Nice job Surly. You keep making it, I’ll keep drkining it.

It’s been a while…

It has been 1.33 years since I wrote an entry - that’s a pretty long time.

Anyway, since I last wrote things have happened. My brother’s wife gave birth to a lovely girl named Mara (she’s .208 years younger than the last post.) My wife and I celebrated our third wedding anniversary (that was .083 years ago). And most exciting – we bought a house (that was only .0164 years ago).

It’s a 97 year old place – I think it’s going to be really great. I’ll post pics of the before and after as we paint, clean and renovate.

Edinburgh Fringe Festival

Just returned from a trip with high school students to perform at the largest theatre festival in the world - the Edinburgh Fringe Festival - and I’m beat.

The results: 70 students, 10 chaperons, 4 sold out shows, one great review, one student hit by a car (he’s fine), a total of 6 flights, way too much time on the bus, too many kids, not enough scotch whiskey, one lost passport (we found it), one highland cow (hee-land coo), two castles, some great ale, too much British food, thousands of photo ops, a spectacular Tattoo, some great student commentary and too many great experiences to cover here.

I’m very tired now and think I’m going to take a nap.

huh, sometimes things just fall into place….

Apparently the Bush administration is trying to find someone willing to take the roll of War Czar and run all of the misguided conflicts. Not surprisingly, they’re having a hard time….
From Reuters:

“Retired Marine Gen. John “Jack” Sheehan, a former top NATO commander, was among those who rejected the job, the newspaper reported.

“The very fundamental issue is, they don’t know where the hell they’re going,” Sheehan told the Post.

Sheehan said he believes that Vice President Dick Cheney and his hawkish allies remain more powerful within the administration than pragmatists looking for a way out of Iraq, the Post reported.

“So rather than go over there, develop an ulcer and eventually leave, I said, ‘No, thanks,’ ” Sheehan told the paper.”

Wii - accidents

Cold Weather

I believe that the earth is warming. I’ve seen plenty of good evidence - including from my very intelligent brother who happens to be a Doctoral Candidate working on forest ecology at the U of M. I’ve never heard a good response to the argument. The Supreme court is hearing a case at this very moment about the EPA regulating the emission of CO2.

The Clean Air Act says that they have to. The EPA has to regulate emissions from sources that:

“cause, or contribute to, air pollution which may reasonably be anticipated to endanger public health or welfare”

Later the Act specifies that “welfare” includes climate and environmental effects. The Bush administration has pushed scientists out of the discussion for long enough - this makes me sad. I don’t understand why it takes a lawsuit by the states to make an agency respond to accepted scientific understandings and do something about this. Weird.
